About the BS–AD date converter

What this converter does

This tool converts any date between Bikram Sambat (BS), Nepal's official calendar, and the Gregorian calendar (AD) that the rest of the world runs on. Pick a date in either calendar and it returns the exact matching date in the other, along with the weekday. It covers roughly BS 2000 through BS 2100 (AD 1943–2044), which spans every birth certificate, citizenship card and official document in circulation today.

Why BS–AD conversion is not simple arithmetic

Bikram Sambat is a solar calendar, but not a simple one. Each month begins when the sun enters a new sidereal sign, so months run 29 to 32 days, and the same month changes length from year to year — Baisakh might have 31 days one year and 30 the next. No fixed formula like "add 56 years and 8 months" survives that. Accurate conversion needs the real month-length table for every BS year, and this converter uses those per-year tables, the same data official Nepali patros are printed from.

The 56.7-year difference, explained

The Bikram Sambat era begins 56 years and about 8½ months ahead of the Gregorian era, so BS 2082 straddles AD 2025 and 2026. The BS new year (Baisakh 1) falls in mid-April: from January to mid-April the difference is 56 years, from mid-April to December it is 57. Take a birth date of 15 Poush 2046. Poush lands in December, after the new year, so the AD year is 2046 minus 57 — December 1989. Getting that subtraction wrong is the most common manual conversion mistake, especially for birthdays near the new year.

Where people use this

The most common uses are converting a BS birth date to AD for passports, foreign university applications, visa forms and international documents; converting AD dates back to BS for Nepali government paperwork, land registration and citizenship records; and finding what day of the week a historical date fell on. Because the converter also shows tithi and calendar events for the selected day, it doubles as a quick lookup for what was happening on that date.

Accuracy and sources

Conversions use the official month-length data published for each Bikram Sambat year, and results are cross-checked against the calendar tables used by printed Nepali patros. One caveat: for years far in the future, month lengths come from astronomical calculation, and Nepal's calendar authorities occasionally revise them when a new official patro comes out. Dates within a year or two of today are always exact.

Date conversion — common questions

How do I convert my BS birth date to AD for a passport?

Select the BS tab, pick your birth year, month and day, and press Convert. The AD result is the date to use on passport and visa forms. Double-check the year: births between Baisakh (April) and Poush (December) convert to a year 57 less than the BS year, while Magh–Chaitra births convert to 56 less.

What is today's date in Bikram Sambat?

Today's BS date is shown at the top of this page, alongside the matching AD date. The homepage calendar also shows the full current BS month with tithi and events for each day.

Why do different websites give slightly different BS–AD results?

Sites that use a fixed mathematical offset instead of the real per-year month tables drift by one or two days, most often on dates near month boundaries. This converter uses the actual month-length table for each BS year, matching the official printed patro.

How many days does each BS month have?

Anywhere from 29 to 32 days, and the same month changes from year to year. That's the whole reason conversion needs tables: no rule of thumb can tell you Bhadra's length without the year's data.

What range of years can I convert?

The converter covers approximately BS 2000–2100, equivalent to AD 1943–2044. That range includes every commonly needed document date; if you need something outside it, contact us via the feedback page.
